Strawberry 100%

Strawberry 100% - 01-02 & NCOP+ED [ReDone-MDC][DVD][H264 FLAC]

Yes, that's right, Strawberry (Ichigo) 100% DVD encodes. 720x480, 4:3, FLAC.

I have already discussed this with Zalis from ReDone Subs; and I will be re-releasing the entire TV series with encodes from the ISO's, with increased video and audio quality. We will also be doing a joint on the OVAs (I will do encodes and chapters, Zalis will do everything else).

Additionally the NCOP, NCED, and NCED alternate (from ep 12) are available as ordered chapters (right click haali splitter and choose one of the "No Credit" Editions). The credited OP/ED (default chapters) are not ordered, so they will play fine in VLC, etc.

Please feel free to leave any feedback/suggestions regarding the encode. BTW, the TV episodes and OVAs will not fit together on one standard 4.7 GB DVD. I played with switching to AAC (Audio Source is 2 ch PCM) and ordered chapters for the Credited Op/Ed, but always came up a few hundred MB too large. I would have had to lower the video quality a little.

For those wondering (no filters used besides crop/resize/IVTC):
program --level 4.1 --preset slow --tune animation --crf 15.0 --thread-input --keyint 240 --min-keyint 24 --bframes 16 --b-adapt 1 --b-pyramid strict --ref 16 --vbv-maxrate 2500 --rc-lookahead 40 --merange 24 --direct spatial --subme 7 --no-fast-pskip --ssim --output "output" "input"

Maniac,

--vbv-maxrate=2500 surely is a typo, you mean 25000, right?

actually, why do you want to limit peakrate at all -- don't you say you care about QUALITY ?

Hi Igor, that's a good question. That's what megui defaulted in. I looked at all of the settings and verified/changed them as needed but must have missed that one. I'll set it to automatic and re-encode and see how much it changes. Thanks for the tip (just another reason to post my settings).

Maniac,

I would like to ask you a question, but, please, do NOT take it as an offense:

Why do you use ratecontrol=CRF at all?

Besides it's not being suited for animation content, you also expressed the desire to manage filesize... why don't you use 2pass?

Maniac said...

I won't take any offense (unless you start calling me names :P )

My desire to manage filesize is secondary. It would be nice to fit everything onto one DVD, but I'm not going to force it to fit unless I really need to. CRF is my preferred method as it uses the bitrate it needs to achieve the desired quality.

That being said, why is CRF not suitable for animated content? I haven't heard that before, nor did some quick google searches uncover anything.

BTW, I just re-encoded Ep 1, OP, and the ED-ALT without the --vbv-maxrate=2500 string. The filesizes and average bitrates were identical, so fortunately it seems nothing was affected.

Mmm, it seems that ratecontrol=crf parameter in your case took precedence over vbv-maxrate... nice.

What's the size for video portion, by the way?

If you want to fit episodes on DVD, 2pass seems to a logical choice. For the anime in question (ichigo100%) - which is pretty static 640x480 source - the average bitrate ~1400-1700 with high qcomp would give you both VERY high quality and fit 13-16 episodes onto a DVD... more easily so as you do use quite agressive x264 settings... without FLAC, OF COURSE!

As for why crf is not the best way for anime ... I have already posted a note at some other blog - so I just put a link here: (I take it you know what QP is ...):

214 MB, but it'd be easier to say that the audio is 110-120 MB per episode.

I see your reasoning on CRF vs 2-pass based on your other post, but do you have any hard proof (either tests, or official doc) that the 2-pass x264 algorithm will actually realize this? I always figured that the 2-pass pretty much did the same thing as CRF, just aiming for a particular filesize. If I'm wrong I'd like to know.
Actually, this post by DarkShikari seems to indicate that I am right:

when I researched CRF vs 2pass -

at large bitrates there is no difference (obviously, when you give MORE than enough bits to x264, it doesn't matter what rate control you use (pretty much))

but as the going gets tough (smaller target filesizes) - the 2pass gets clear edge over crf. Like, with crf=21's bitrate 2pass looked like crf=18 or better... to my eyes, at least ;-)

again, I tried it on a static anime (it was Haruhi 1, actually).

and since I am convinced that 2pass is better for anime (if you care about filesize, that is)

When did you do the encode? Doing some reading it appears that the algorithm changed sometime between 2007 and 2008.

I did the research with Haruhi 1 DVDs - summer 2007... if you remember, it had REALLY heavy OP - which looked awfull in most encodes - that prompted me to look into 2pass in the first place.

rats...

mmm...

ok, obviously I need to look into this matter again.

Thank you, Maniac!

Haha, no, thank you! BTW I'm playing with the qcomp settings. It looks like using 2-pass with 0.8 might give me a bit higher quality (using 0.8 on CRF 15 inflates the file size a lot!). I will play some more and see if it's worth encoding things over again, but the difference looks pretty minimal right now (this is only based on the OP though, the whole episode 1 will give more detail, it's encoding now).

BTW, this is why the maxrate wasn't causing any issues for me, excerpt from my log:
---[NoImage] x264 [warning]: VBV maxrate specified, but no bufsize.

Igor said...

Well, obviously the difference would be minimal - you are using crf=15 ... 15!! ... after all. I doubt one can get _visible_ improvements from there...

Anyhow, I am going to look into 2pass vs crf again. Sorry for pestering you in the first place.

I should have checked it before ...

cheers

Haha, well that's true. Episode 1 encode differences:

0.6 qcomp CRF 15:
---[NoImage] x264 [info]: SSIM Mean Y:0.9915733
---[NoImage] x264 [info]: kb/s:1239.06

(not sure why I didn't just punch 1239 into the bitrate, I used the calculator for some reason).
0.8 qcomp 2-pass 1269 kb/s:
---[NoImage] x264 [info]: SSIM Mean Y:0.9916099
---[NoImage] x264 [info]: kb/s:1270.75

Hi Living,

You're welcome :).

Is there really any benefit to using CRF for the 1st pass? Threads I found from 2007 seemed to indicate there was benefit to this, but 2008 threads stated that there is no longer a reason to do this.
2008 Thread

I'll be re-uploading a batch torrent when I have all the torrents done, so just get what you can from the individual and get the rest from the batch. I don't have the spare bandwidth to upload to MU or other filesharing sites... DSL only :(.

Thanks!

Haha, well you are also one man ;).

I'll look into it, but I'll have to find hard science behind it to be willing to do it (I'll probably also do some testing of my own). Thanks for the suggestion!

No problem on deleting the post.

Hi,

Your encodes are not compatible with DXVA. I recommend you reduce ref frames from 16 to 4.

Maniac said...

Hi Seele,
Thanks for the feedback, I'll change that on whatever my next series is. I thought only the level mattered, I didn't realize the reference frames were taken into account separately.

Interestingly enough, Cyberlink's DXVA decoder works flawlessly with the episodes on both my Viliv S5 w/GMA500 and my GTX 480, but the episodes do not play correctly using FFDshow's DXVA or Arcsoft's decoder.

Hi, again.
Just wanna say that you shouldn't bother yourself with dxva compatibility unless it's a BD :)

P.S. Also check out my 1st public release http://www.nyaatorrents.org/?page=torrentinfo&tid=146086
Hope to see your batch soon
